We chose to base the start up of our company Abalro Health on bringing the barberry into New Zealand. Founder and Co-CEO Alex Livingstone came across an article on a double blind placebo study by the University of Michigan that showed that by taking two teaspoons of these berries a day could reduce acne by up to 43% in a month! After not being able to find these amazing berries on the New Zealand market, we knew that we had to introduce this berry to Kiwi’s all across New Zealand.
Among the anti-acne effects from the berberine compound in barberries, barberries also have an abundance of other health benefits including the high level of antioxidants that far exceeds other superfoods like blueberries or acai berries.

Abalro at the world expo in Dubai!
Where it started …
We founded Abalro Health in 2020 under the Young Enterprise Scheme. With the support of this program, and the amazing mentors that helped us along the way, we made a great start to building Abalro Health and even took out the national title for YES company of the year. Under this program we were also accepted into the Global Kaitiakitangi Project where we learnt about the global exporting process from NZTE experts. We ended this program with a dragon’s den style pitch and were deemed joint winners and were named ‘New Zealand Ambassadors for Youth Business’ and were lucky to represent our company and country at the World Expo in Dubai 2020.
Our Why …
We have a vision of helping teenagers like us have an effective and 100% natural solution to help relieve their acne symptoms. We know how challenging acne can be, not only physically but also mentally. We want to help build up teenagers’ self confidence and well-being so that they feel confident putting themselves out there. We want to introduce the superfood barberry into the New Zealand market as we believe in our product and want to make the benefits easily accessible to any Kiwi who suffers from acne, or just wants to improve their overall health and wellbeing.
